ADOPTED

In August of 2017, I was talking to God as I was driving to the nearest major city. One of my favorite Bible verses came into my spirit so I started to sing what I heard. You see, I have a tendency in my private prayer time to reword songs, add a verse, and combine hymns. It is not polished but I offer to God what is in my heart. I am not a singer, musician or worship leader, I am a grateful daughter who has been adopted by God Himself.

The verse that came into my spirit that day was 1 John 3:1. The apostle wrote, Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Have you ever pondered that you are His child? We who were once His enemies are now His children (Romans 5:10). That is the joy of my salvation! I am grateful for being delivered from the death that my sins required but I am overwhelmed when I consider that I am His beloved daughter.

Being God’s child was not always an impactful reality for me. I knew in my head but now the Holy Spirit bears witness with my spirit that I am adopted into God’s family (Romans 8:16). I am His, and He is mine. His love is real to me. I am secure in knowing that He cares about me. Do you have peace and joy that you are His child? All people are created by God but not all people are His children. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God (Romans 8:14). If you are being guided by the Holy Spirit, you are His child, too.

God wants a family that looks like Him. He wants us to act like Him, talk like Him, and to have His intentions. He wants us to reflect His character. When God brings us into His family, we are nothing like Him. We have our own ideas of what a “good person” is and what a “good person” does. This is why we must be led by the Spirit. We are to be conformed to the image of His Son so that Jesus might be the firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8:29). Can you boldly declare that you are His child?
