I love the Lord’s Supper! I did not gain such a love until I experienced a drought of it. I grew up in a Baptist church where Communion was served monthly. Like clockwork, the deaconesses would wear their outfits that were just for Communion Sunday, and prepare the elements. The Communion wafers and grape juice were placed in heavy, silver containers under a pure white tablecloth at the front of the sanctuary. They would be there as we prayed, sang, welcomed guests, read announcements, and listened to a sermon. Then, the pinnacle of that service was taking Communion.
When I relocated and began visiting churches, I learned that communion is not always served on a regular basis. I am not advocating for any level of frequency. I just know that now when I see the Communion table prepared, I rejoice. I love the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice that Jesus made for me. I think about how He willingly suffered, and became sin, so that I could have a relationship with the Father. I love the opportunity to reflect inwardly about any sins that I have committed, but not sought forgiveness, and to receive it in that moment.
One day, when I was preparing to take Communion, I was pondering Paul’s instructions in my heart. In I Corinthians 11:26, For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes. Every time, we come to the Communion table, we are declaring that Jesus’ death was not an ordinary death and that we are waiting for Him to return for us.
Then, the Holy Spirit reminded me of Jesus’ words in Matthew 26:29. “But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.” The revelation hit me and I nearly gasped. While we are waiting on Jesus to return, He is waiting to be with us, too. Our Lord, Savior, and King is waiting on us. What a glorious day that will be! We will see Jesus face-to-face. Can you imagine what that day will be like when we are with our Lord? I get excited every time I think about it. I encourage you to consider Jesus’ words now and the next time you partake of Communion. He is waiting on you.
