THE APPOINTMENT

A black and white photo of a pocket watch. It symbolizes being on time for your appointment with God.

Have you ever noticed that when you have an appointment at a doctor’s office there is a window of time for you to arrive? It does not matter that you sat in traffic for an hour. Whether the grace period is five, ten, or fifteen minutes, if you are late your appointment is cancelled. Do you know that you have an appointment with God?

In Genesis 26, God promises that He will perform the covenant that He made with Abraham through Isaac. God explains to Isaac that it is because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws (Genesis 26:5). A study of the Hebrew word translated into statutes (and its corresponding equivalents) reveals several possible definitions. However, I found one definition of particular interest.

Statutes can be defined as appointed, an enactment; hence an appointment (of time, space, quantity, labor or usage). Abraham was appointed to a specific time, place, and task. Abraham obeyed God’s voice and performed what God envisioned for his life. Abraham’s obedience began God’s covenant with man that would be fulfilled through Jesus.

Maybe you do not consider your life as significant and impactful as Abraham’s but each of us has an appointment with God. We are called to a specific time, place, and task. It does not matter how “big” the call because God considers our obedience to the appointment. Are you where God has appointed you to be? Are you going when God is telling you to go? Are you doing what God has told you to do?

God is gracious. You do not know how long your grace period is for you to show up to your appointment with God. If you repent, ask for forgiveness, and open your heart to obeying God, I believe that God will allow you to keep your appointment. Moses was given an appointment but because he tried to fulfill it with his youthful strength and vigor, he was forced to run from Egypt to escape being killed by Pharaoh. God came to Moses 40 years later to fulfill the appointment His way. And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant…(Hebrews 3:5) Are you ready to show up to your appointment?
