Have you ever been in love? It is amazing how a love song can express the perfect words for how you feel. Oftentimes, different love songs will remind you of different phases of your relationship. God spoke about a love song but it was not for a good reason. Ezekiel 33:30-32 reads, As for you, son of man, the children of your people are talking about you beside the walls and in the doors of the houses; and they speak to one another, everyone saying to his brother, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain. Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.
During Ezekiel’s time, the Israelites were in captivity in Babylon. God had allowed their enemy to conquer and carry them away because they refused to give up their idols and worship Him. Even in captivity, God was rebuking them. They were assembling themselves just as the people of God should do. However, the Word of God through the prophet was as a love song to them. They enjoyed hearing it but had no intention of applying it. They were still going to go after their own desires.
How are you treating the Word of God? With so much media access to the Word today, we never want to take it lightly and use it as entertainment. We should never assemble into the church to hear a great sermon, but fail to look for ways to live it. The Word of God is always where our desires and intentions are challenged. We must be willing to submit to the Word and allow the Holy Spirit to change us. Has the Word of God become sweet to your ears but it does not penetrate your heart?
In Luke 8:18 (AMP), Jesus warns us that if we are not careful in how we respond to the Word, what we already know will be taken away. So be careful how you listen; for whoever has [a teachable heart], to him more [understanding] will be given; and whoever does not have [a longing for truth], even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.” Do you have a heart that is still determined to go after your own desires or are you teachable? If you are feeling stuck in your relationship with God, consider how you have responded to His Word. The sweetest love song that we can “sing” to God is through lives of obedience and surrender to Him.
